Intro · はじめに

SHOW-YA formed in 1981 and went major in 1985 — an all-female hard-rock band sold first as a Coke-ad girl group, then as a Budokan metal act. In Japan they were huge at the turn of the 1990s: Outerlimits went double platinum, 限界LOVERS was a Shell jingle everyone knew, and they founded NAONのYAON, the all-female outdoor festival later girls-metal bands on this site still walk onto. Outside Japan they were never a household name. This Primer is not their discography. It is four audible turns: the first records, the metal peak, the last year with 寺田恵子, and the original five sitting down again. Listen in order. 初期 · The first show

1985–1987

Major debut, Abbey Road mixes, still being styled as a girl-band product. The live set already had the riff; the records had not caught up.

1988–1989

Andy Johns, glam weight, then Outerlimits. 限界LOVERS and 私は嵐 — the year Japan actually heard them as a metal band.

1990

Beau Hill in Los Angeles. Peak popularity at home, no household name abroad, then 寺田 walks. Last studio hour of the original five before the 1990s split them.
